My Dear Bror.
I rec.d yr letter of March 10. last & thank you
for it. I rejoice that your life is preserved and that you
are still enabled to persevere in the good ways of God: I hope
also your labours of love for his cause will not be in vain in
the Lord. Your letter gave considerable light into the state of
the Mission at Otaheite. Indeed it is hard to say what is best to
be done respecting it. For my part I am inclined to think
that the humble plan as you call it is the best and that 4 or 6
devoted & zealous Missionaries, giving themselves up wholly to the
Lord's work, without any incumbrance from worldly affairs,
would answer a better purpose than a host of them, which
will only excite the jealousy of the natives, whom they would not
be  numerous enough to repel, should they be attacked. The matter
is to be taken into solemn consideration on the 24th of this month
& possibly I may be able to inform you of the result by this con
-veyance, or soon after after by another.
I suppose you know of my removal from Coventry
which took place at Midsummer 1803. In consequence of the death
of Mr Eyre I was desired to become Secretary of the Missionary
Society & Editor of the Magasine. I thought it my duty to accept
the office, as promising greater usefulness & as I was very
much hurt by the conduct of some of our friends as well
as of the town at large in two contested Elections, which rendered
my situation uncomfortable. I rejoice that they [indecipherable] soon
settled with an excellent young minister, Mr Jerrard, he is one
of the young men taken in Mr Duff & is very steady, prudent and pious & an able preacher. I believe he will be ordained next month. Almost all are comited in him; 1 case a dissenting
voice in the Church & but 2 or 3 dissatisfied in the congregation
which keeps up very well.
