My dear Brother,

It was indeed a great gratification to me to secure your affectionate letter of the 9th May.  Altho' the news contained in it was not what I could have anticipated!  Both Elizabeth & Isabella have undergone sad & bitter trials, but let me hope that all cause for anxiety has long been departed from among you and that hence the [indecipherable] has shed its healing influences over the hearts that have been so sorely afflicted!
I cannot understand this outbreak of fever in our once healthy climate and especially at so great a distance from any over-peopled locality.  The virulent nature of this feavor in England is attributed almost entirely to the [indecipherable]
