no easy matter to keep the house warm - we managed however, to secure a temperature above 60o  many of our night hours cold with fires in their bedrooms had their jugs & water bottles broken by the ice.  So much for thick [indecipherable]!  In the stores & observatory we have been very fortunate, as [indecipherable] at this [indecipherable] we have plenty of Camellias, & dear native flowers ( [indecipherable] Tetratheca) in blossom - out of doors    there will be sad havoc & it is even feared that the [indecipherable] and many of the conifers will perish.  I will not  enter into any detail of the lamentable catastrophe from the breaking of the ice in the [indecipherable] Park, as the papers will give you full particulars & the subject [indecipherable] distressing to dwell upon.
Tell William that we met his old friend Professor [indecipherable] a few days ago, & he enquired most kindly for him / as he [indecipherable] fails to do, he & Mrs. [indecipherable] are full of
