[Page 178]

had a magnificent [indecipherable] carnation in flower lately, which, in form, size & scent surpasses any thing of the kind I have met with.  The plants were given me by Sir Alex? Milne, who [indecipherable] it originally at Lisbon & has since grown it on his own [indecipherable] house at Inveresk in Scotland.  He told me that the parent plant filled an immense [indecipherable] on his verandah, & was constantly covered with flowers as large as good sized roses.
The colour is a delicate fawn or cream colour - the scent most delicious - I wish I could send you cuttings dear Bth, but I will try to send some seed, which may perchance, produce the like.
We often see your old friends the [indecipherable] - they dine with us next week, as do the Hooker's, Lady Gipps [indecipherable] & other friends - it is a long time
