Conflicting rumours had already reached me, respecting Mr. Napier, but I am non the less obliged to you for what you mention upon this subject. It is to be hoped that the Directors will institute a searching enquiry, and that the whole affairs of the Bank may be thoroughly investigated. My misgivings were about a year ago aroused, by the non receipt for a considerable time of one Australian remittance, and we were in consequence put to some inconvenience. A strong remonstration to Mr. Napier, failed to bring me a satisfactory explanation, but nothing certainly occurred to entitle me to [indecipherable] upon him a misappropriation. The blame of the delay was shifted to the shoulders of Mr. Niell (the Secretary) and I cannot say that I regarded his rejoinder, as in any respect a justification.
