During my stay in Devonshire last year we visited amongst other objects of great interest, the old Church at Bridgerule. It was much out of repair & Mr. Kingdom told us, that he was endeavouring to restore it, but that for lack of funds the work was proceeding very slowly.

A wish occurred to me to give some assistance & I think it only right to communicate to the members of my own family the substance of what has taken place, as they will I feel assured, take a like interest in the subject with myself.  The following extracts from Mrs. Kingdoms letter will explain themselves, as also will those from Sir Dyke Acland.

My dear Lady Parker,

Ii have just received your kind letter enclosing a generous contribution towards the repair of our old Church for both of which I thank you very much.  I am almost afraid to say that I well may be required to put the Church into thorough repair, but our intention was to do a little towards it every year as we might have the means - only that having just finished a new roof at a cost of £130, we felt that we must rest on our oars for a time.  A  new East Window is shortly to be put in & them a new
