Monday 14th Sept - Left home at 8.00 arrived at the Euston station at 9.30.  Started by Express train for Carlisle at 10 - & arrived there at 6.30 having travelled a distance of 300 miles, with little or no interruption of speed, the continuance of this rapid motion for so many hours was most fatiguing & we were glad indeed to find [indecipherable] in a comfortable hotel.  The hotel is attached to & leads from the station by a covered way.  On getting out of the train we found that Mrs. [indecipherable] John [indecipherable] on her way from Guernsey to Scotland, had been a fellow passenger with us, so were naturally glad to meet after an interval of many eventul years!  There was great commotion at the Hotel throughout
