one day having landed from a boat in the Botanic gardens my foot slipped into one of those treacherous quick sands in the upper garden & i sank suddenly [indecipherable] my knee - poor dear Bridget who was with me, thinking I was about to disappear altogether, pulled me by the arm with all her strength.  The arm felt helpless, & as I thought broken, but when Dr. McEwan came he said he would rather have had a broken bone to contend with - Never shall I forget his [indecipherable] "with his slight [indecipherable]", he said "I wonder she had not have torn limb from limb & now it will be months if not years before the arm recovers" -
