[MS 252]
The latest advices from V J Nantucket down to the 19th April, and were brought to England by a South Whaler. by them it appears, that the convicts took no part whatever in the late Desturbances in that country, which had its origins in a difference between the Colonists and Governor Bligh. The latter had thought it imprudent, on various occasions to put in confinement some of the respectable inhabitants as it was conceived on ? the grounds. At length the people became fumuttsrisk and and demanded the Governor and were beginning to proceed to acts of violence in order to get him into their power - Mayor Johnstone who had the command of the military in ? the absence of Lieutenant Colonel Paterson who was at one of the Dependancies, ? ? The people were unman- ageable, in order to restore tranquillity promised to confine the Governor until his conduct was properly investigated accordingly despatched a gaurd to his house to seize him: but before the governor having received intimation of his intended arrest Made his escape & hid himself in an adjoining house where he was found under a bed from whence he was dragged. He was immediately put in a place of security, and Col. Paterson was sent for, who it was expected would send him home. This affair has terminated as the colony became immediately tranquil.
