in the Continental recently -then danced till 2 G.M. At least I danced & they looked on. It is these little dinners and dances that make Egypt bearable. I wish you were here Mabel to show some of these girls how to do the two step. But despite the attractions of Cairo we are all feeling a little bit restless and anxious to get a move on: Specially as the bulk of the division is now moving off.  

5.4.15   General Birdwood came out to Church parade yesterday. It was a nice Easter service.   I had charge of the arrangements   and was tickled to death to have the whole brigade packed in the huge cinema-tent with not a vacant seat & not a man standing by 4 minutes to 10.   This is what the army calls 'excellent staff work' (Swish). Charles Knowles, the famous English baritone came out & sang a couple of sacred solos. (You will see his name on lots of the well known baritone songs).   Anyhow I dont think his voice is nearly so sweet as Jacks.   I know that Jack can sing "Calvary" better than Knowles sang "There is a green hill far away".   But in justice to the Englishman I must admit that he sings "My old shako" splendidly, better even than Jim   (Honour bright Jim: he does). A few officers of the 5th Light Horse Rgt - Queenslanders - went with us yesterday out to the Barage. This is one of the most wonderful works in Egypt.    Mohammed Ali started it years ago to irrigate the Delta. But his engineers made a few mistakes and the works were regarded as a huge white elephant until England took charge. A board of eminent English engineers made the most exhaustive examination
