nice. Col Ryrie beat the General at Billiards while I succeeded in losing a game of snooker. The Residency is on a big hill & the motor ride is just like a switchback railway or the Scenic [Stunt?] at the White City. It is but beautifully furnished & we got the latest war cables from the Vice Roy of India. It appears that absolutely nothing of importance had happened since we left Australia. The Allies were evidently waiting for the Second Australians to come along before starting to wipe Germany off the map.
Next morning Miss Shaw & Mrs Shaw came on board to see us. They were kind. So were we. They were the first ladies we had seen since leaving Australia.
I should have told you about the harbour. It is nothing startling but at night with all the ships it looks fine. The search lights play all around just like they do at the Heads,
