& have just returned).
I just saw some delightful artillery work. One of the German guns started its usual hymn of hate. Instead of blazing away at the beach it fired at a little steamer a mile off the Cove. It put 10 shots all round it but never scored a hit. A couple of times the shell fell within a couple of yards of the boat (just like they did the day we landed) The steamer backed, and the shell fell just in front. Our boys cheered every miss. At last the little steamer bolted out into the Aegean and the guns ceased their hymn of hate.
The other afternoon they gave us a great bombardment & played the very devil (Beg pardon my darlings) deuce with the atmosphere all round us, tearing great rents in the inoffensive air, but not doing much harm. Yesterday a Turkish sniper poked borak at us. He was 1000 yards away & very hard to see, even with the binoculars. One of our snipers had a couple of shots & missed... A sergeant hat 2 shots & missed, an artillery Captain had 2 shots & the sniper took out his hanky & started to brush the flies off himself
