place. You have heard all about it long ago - we saw one Indian force marching out with rations, stretcher bearers. ammunition, mules & everything ready for action. Later on we saw the British line away out on the desert & could dimly discern the smoke of battle & hear the boom of guns. But our luck was out as we never fired a shot all the way except for practice. A big British force was encamped at Ishmalia [Ismailia] & our ships steamed into the lake and swung round with the stern guns pointing towards the enemy. Our old tub had the luck to go aground and lay on the mud all night broadside on to the enemy but they were several miles away & nothing happened.
