they fire they shake the whole mountain. The earth rolls into my dug out & down my back.   I've not had a bath or a wash since I landed - no water to wash with.   The beach is mostly shelled but when I get an hour I'm going in.   The [Gochen?]   this morning sent shells right across the peninsula and they nearly landed on one of our own ships. There is a fusillade of rifle & maxim fire all day & night. We are quite used to it. Now and then a bullet whines over our heads and sings a high song of trumph. Our fellows call them 'canaries'. We have learned to dodge the shrapnel. We hear it coming a mile off and dash for cover.  

Later 21/5/15.   This morning Col Byrne & I did the rounds of the regiments. We sat for half an hour in Col Cox's dug out and shortly after we left a shrapnel shell burst & wounded Col. Cox on the leg.    I've just been to the beach for a swim. Its fine.   The fellows are getting used to shell fire now. Last night I fell asleep [rest indecipherable]
