of Genr Neill in bronze - around the base of the pedestal is a beautiful reproduction of the last scene of the Hero's life - The inscription is as follows: "James George Smith-Neill C.B. A.D.C. to the Queen - Liet Col in the Madras Army - Brigadier Genr, in India - a brave resolute self-reliant soldier, universally acknowledged as the first who stemmed the torrent of rebellion in Bengal. He fell gloriously at the Relief of Lucknow 25th Sept. 57 aged 47." A counterpart of this Statue is also erected in India. On the day of the inauguration at Ayr Mrs. Neill heard of the death at [indecipherable] of her last surviving son, and an address was presented to her on the occasion by Ld Eglantor from the County.
