7TH SEPTEMBER 1914
"Sydney" to Brigadier, 4-30 p.m. I have sent "Kanowna" direct to Townsville.
"Sydney" to Brigadier, 4-40 p.m.:- Would you like any message transmitted with regard to Troops? (Captain of "Sydney" requested to supply particulars as to trouble on the "Kanowna" before I can reply to above question).
"Sydney" to Brigadier, 5-28 p.m.:- Reply: It was only the firemen who mutinied; there were volunteers from the troops to do the stoking. I suggest that Trainees be disbanded, and if more troops required seasoned men passed medical test be employed.
Brigadier to "Sydney":- I consider "Kanowna" detachment as at present constituted and equipped unfit for immediate service, and in view of to-day's events and your action in ordering Ship back to Townsville, recommend disbandment and reorganization if Admiral considers further troops necessary. Request that arrangements be made for Captain Fry loaned from "Berrima" to "Kanowna" as Adjutant to return to this force earliest opportunity.
"Sydney" to Brigadier: - 6.30 p.m. - Do you wish me to make that an official message from you re troops? Reply sent at 6-35 p.m. - "Yes".
Sydney" to Brigadier, 6-45 p.m.:- R.A.C. asks have you any orders as to administration of New Britain.
"Brigadier to "Sydney", 7-5 p.m.:- My orders are to seize all German wireless stations in Pacific, and occupy German Territory soon as possible under Admiral's instructions, or, failing such instructions, or in any emergency, carry out the objects of expedition. Further, hoist British Flag in all Territory occupied with success, and make suitable arrangements for temporary administration. I have plans prepared for giving effect to this.
Sydney" to Brigadier (From R.A.C.) - 6-5- p.m.:- Inform Brigadier "Berrima's troops sufficient.
8TH SEPTEMBER, 1914:
"Sydney" to Brigadier, 9-45 a.m.:- Will you please have your report on "Kanowna" troops ready for transmission to R.A.C. on joining at 8-0 a.m. to-morrow. Reply sent at 9-50 a.m. "Report has already been prepared".
"Sydney" to Brigadier, 10.0 a.m.:- Reply - "Thank you".
"Sydney" to Brigadier, (R.A.C. to "Sydney"), 11-0 a.m.:- "I concur in your action".
