just below this. Leaving the crossing we we travelled west up a sloping range but were stopped by a precipitous gorge. Turning back we recrossed the creek. Fred and I being generally ahead in different directions looking for an ac-cessible route, but without avail. ranges of sandstone boulders seemed to hem us in on all sides, the creek only finding exit by surging in roaring cascades down a great chasm. We resolved to camp beside a clear gur-gling brook that meandered through the pine trees and fell over the rocks into the main creek. In the afternoon Fred and I resaddled and made another attempt to find a
