From observations that I took
from the tops of mountains
the country appeared to be the
same along the western bank
of the river all the way to
St Georges Basin. But on the
east or right hand side of the river
there is a large tract, probably
500 square
miles of good land of volcanic
formation, in some places con -
sisting of level downs at
others of steep stony hills, but
so thickly covered with grass
that the stones are hidden, ex -
cept where large basaltic boulders crop
out. This volcanic
