us, they remained there all
night until we packed up and
left the camp next morning.
On another occasion when we were
camped near the Marigui River
Allan was on sentry watch; just
before daylight, he could hear
the grass rustling in different directions
round the camp, he fixed at a
dark object which gave a groan
and disappeared. [Another]
place at the tidal water was
called Nigger Gorge on account
of the number of nigger encamp-
ments there. But I do not
think there would be any serious
trouble with the Blacks, nor do I
consider them to be as numerous
or vicious as the pearlers and
others represent them.
