Thursday 9. Travelled 4 miles on clear distance W.M.W and camped beside a beautiful rocky creek, with splendid horse feed. We wasted several miles in going north along a valley which passed into a rocky ravine impassabl for horses so we had to turn back and finding this creek I determined to camp till I can find a pass over the ranges.

     In the afternoon I rode for several hours over stony moun-tains. All the basalt ranges of this country are covered with a thick [sward?] of grass several feet high, which com-pletely hides the stones, so that men and horses put their feet down in the most awkward places and often slip some feet
