20.8.1915. On the eve of our departure from Liverpool, on the 16th of August, the choral society gave Mr Burkard a serenade in honour of his selfless activity in the interest of the camp. Lehrenkrauss, the conductor, said a few words and toasted B. Deeply touched, the latter then made a speech that was truly exceptional and was received with great enthusiasm and a toast to the Kaiser and the Empire.
On the same evening, the theatre staged a farewell revue and among other things the following poem by Mathiessen was recited:
Farewell to Liverpool
There is great general mourning, Everybody in camp is sorry
That some of the comrades
Will move on to new shores.
The very best
Of all the Liverpool guests, the fattest of the cattle
are forging ahead.
Just as we all thought That we’ll be set for life, Comes the password: Hurrah, And off they go to Trial Bay.
The pancake maker, Embittered over poor sales, Just had his hot plate widened, And look, to no avail.
