one cannot but get steeled in such primitive conditions. Given that the washbasin is the only place where one can, and is allowed to, launder one’s clothes, the inadequacy of the facility is glaringly obvious. Here too they promised some improvements, but it will probably remain a promise.
The camp actually consists of 2 parts, the camp proper, which is about 450 ft wide and equally long, and the football field that is now the mustering ground, which is about 150 ft wide and about 460 ft long. A barbed wire encloses the whole camp and also runs between the two parts so that the football field can be closed off after evening roll-call and is not reopened until morning roll-call. Soldiers with loaded rifles and bayonets at the ready stand alongside [the barbed wire] and there are a few mounted guards further away. Room to move in the camp proper, especially after dinner when one would like a bit of exercise, is therefore very limited. The football field is not really good for play because it is full of holes and also rather sloping. We would first have to get it into some proper shape. Otherwise,
