march daylight had faded, and after arriving in the outer camp we had to line up for body count and roll-call. Again our hand luggage was rigorously searched and the last drop of alcohol, which we had rescued with great difficulty, was confiscated. Unfortunately, that was not all, because even our entire money, bar £3-4.-/.- each, changed into the hands of an Australian officer, who promised to give us, and later delivered, a receipt. Upon request, we were to get the money back on a pro rata basis, £5.-/.- every fortnight. Smuggling it through was hardly possible because they opened our coats and vests, etc and emptied all pockets and felt our bodies all over, and yet some managed to hide away a few gold pieces in their boots and socks. The eyes of the collecting officer widened more and more as the pile of money grew, especially when, towards the end, it was the turn of us older men. The collected amount totalled about £4500.-/.-
