small peninsula that stretches into Trial Bay. The terrain consists for the most part of granite, and former convicts have used the same material to erect the building and the surrounding walls. To the right of the gate, the rock drops sharply into the sea, about 50 feet, and previous prisoners have built a small but strong mole from granite, which however is not quite finished. Scattered rails, badly rusted and dilapidated, as well as small trolleys, some still laden, suggest that our predecessors abandoned their work pretty abruptly. What could have been the reason? They say: lack of water! Let’s hope it was an amnesty and not something detrimental to our health. On the other side of the gate, the hill drops off gently towards Trial Bay, to a beautiful large beach, our main playground; I have hardly seen such a beautiful beach apart from the one in Binz. Between beach and prison lie the ruins of the prison’s former brickworks, laundry, etc
