arrive at our destination, and yet we were a long way off since we had only just got to the gates and still had all sorts of adventures before us. During the march, although weighed down by our hand luggage and occasionally prodded by the Pommies to walk faster, it had all been fairly relaxed and gentlemanlike, but once inside the camp, behind the barbed wire, the picture was to change. Troops and officers soon adopted a much harsher tone, peppered with Australian slang that was all new to us.
At the gate to the inner camp a large part of our future comrades had assembled and greeted us with a big hello, one German patriotic song after another burst forth from hundreds of throats. The camp seems to be rather populated already, but still the faith in our just cause, and in an ultimate victory of German might, seems unbroken. Hopefully, it will stay that way.
