inmates have to sit out their time on water and bread. A day after imprisonment, without interrogation or sentencing, Meyer ordered that he [Timmermann] pull a road roller; T. said he didn’t feel he was strong enough to do that, having been insufficiently fed. Meyer insisted on the task under threat of his gun and when T. kept refusing, M. got enraged and shot him in the leg. Now our comrade lies in hospital and is being treated by Meyer himself.
The hospital is outside [the camp] on a little hill about 5 walking minutes away. It consists
of a few tents and is said to be equipped very poorly. Its supervisor is, as mentioned above, Mr Meyer, before whom one has to appear mornings at 9 o’clock. Regardless of what is ailing you, you’ll be first treated with Black or White draft. These medicines have one or the other effect on your stomach and as a consequence, many a patient forgets to reappear. Those who still haven’t had enough will have to be examined by a doctor who comes every morning for an hour
