In the vicinity of the Melbourne camp, they’ve put up the soldiers returning from Egypt and suffering from venereal disease. Allegedly there are about 400 of them right now in this Triparary Camp. Over time, 4000-5000 men have been treated there for such ailments. The newspapers reported that the men had been hit by a particularly strong strain of measles. Poor guys! The prostitutes of Port Said should be rewarded by the German empire for having done their bit to wound our enemies.

30th July 1915. There is an inquiry going on in Sydney into the nearby military camp, and Major Sands has been summoned as a witness. His statements were reported in the Daily Telegraph of 20th July. I have copied them since they are very interesting and bear witness to the man’s character. There have been a few improvements since the strike, but not many. The lavatory has been half covered with corrugated iron about 8 days ago, but there are still no proper walls. We have built a warm-water basin [tank?] ourselves, at our expense, because cold showers in the open air were hard to take.
