back we passed 2 small farmsteads of very shabby appearance, which have absolutely nothing in common with our German farmhouses. Both were built entirely from corrugated iron and looked as if they’d collapse at the slightest gust. It wasn’t just the buildings that looked dirty, dishevelled and messy, but also the residents.
Recently we even had a marriage in the camp. The groom had been on a plantation in New Zealand but had ordered a bride and was about to fetch her in Sydney when war erupted and he was interned. The wedding took place in the Major’s office, with a priest who had come from Sydney. Afterwards the young couple
