This attempt clearly illustrates the Major’s character. We asked to be left alone in order to consult with each other, and the officers departed. I proposed to tell the Major right away that after such a proposition we would have to refuse to intervene at all in the strike, but I was seconded by only 4 men. Suhl made the following mediation proposal:
[original in English] Through your proposal of removal you have touched our honour and
made it for us almost impossible to convince the majority to abstain from further strike. Nevertheless on condition that you agree to receive a committee of one man per company to-morrow and to discuss with them the points at issue, we shall try to do the best in the matter.
Despite the protest of us 4 [should be 5] this was accepted by majority vote and, upon his return, approved by the Major. We returned to camp and presented the outcome to our comrades. As was to be expected, the majority did not wish to make any concessions but wanted to continue the strike
