Tea and coffee are okay, better at least than the stuff we got from the government in Singapore. We do enjoy the locally available fresh apples and pears, which are in no way inferior to European fruit.
The camp’s canteen is located in a small tent, supervised by an officer and run by Australian Pommies with the help of 2 German employees. Since the canteen wasn’t prepared for such cashed-up clients as we Singapore people, the pantry was very small when we came and soon sold out. And because our big suitcases are not arriving, despite our protests – they say there is not enough room here – we had to buy shirts and underwear, etc, which is all quite expensive. As for beverages, there is only a non-alcoholic type of weiss beer which tastes abominably, and in the mornings fresh milk which is quite good. – You can buy butter almost anytime – The canteen is very poorly appointed and not commercially efficient. There seems to be no control whatsoever, from the manager down to the last employee all are said to help themselves to the till.
