The stockrooms for food and clothing etc are also managed by Meyer and Tindall, assisted by Mr Hiller, a civilian prisoner. The latter has been here since the beginning of war and is the man most hated in the camp because of his abominable behaviour towards fellow prisoners and his proven ratting. He can’t show his face in the camp proper or he would be beaten up right away and he therefore lives outside. For people like him, as for the Australians, the camp has coined the beautiful term ‘’hat makers’’. This infamous trio operates hand in hand and is said to be enriching itself hugely at the expense of the camp and the government, since there seems to be no form of supervision. They are, as we say,
‘’healthy’’ for life.
The prison (the Kallabush) is also located outside the camp; it is a corrugated iron-covered building, maybe 25-30 ft long and 10-15 ft wide. The sides consist of rows of stakes held together by cross-beams. Inside,
