Every 10 men form a unit, but most of them have subdivided into units of 5, so they have
an area of 8 ft by 12 ft per unit, and thus each man is allocated an area of not quite 20 sq ft, whereas the law for indigenous workers in the Straits F.M.S. [??] proscribes 50 sq ft per coolie in a closed room! Between each barrack there is a path of 13 ft width, and after
every 3rd path there is one of 20 ft width. Wind and rain tear through the rooms, and the
cold cannot be kept out in any way. One is also completely defenceless against the terrible dust that prevails in the camp after a few days of dry weather and which renders the rooms dirty in no time.
The temperatures keep changing all the time too. In the first few days we had
20-24 degrees Celsius at noon in the shade
11 degrees Celsius at 9pm
6 degrees Celsius at 6am
and since winter proper is yet to come, night-time temperatures
