for its troops as possible. Some of the hyperbole in the press reaches us despite the general newspaper ban, and thus we saw the following poem in the Sydney Sunday Times, published by the Sydney Daily Telegraph, one of the leading Australian newspapers: [the following is in English in the original]
Germany’s monstrous crime The sinking of the Lusitania by Jack Bradshaw
You German monsters – deep dyed hounds
Barbarians, now you boast For sinking of the Lusitania Yet in hell you’ll roast.
You cowardly skunks, you murderers Reptiles of the german nation Sausages and sourcrout
Of Baboon propagation.
Down with these Cretons, Hybrids too
Condemned by God on High
Kaiser Bill, thou archfiend
As no one can deny.
You cowardly pirates of the high sea
Mongrels to a mothers son
You filthy dogs and german hogs
Your dirty race is run.
Curse all Germans from my heart
Down them, I say,
Spare not a cur of these spurious born, But rip, embowel, I pray.
No mercy show these savages
Torture, cut them down.
Tear them up with shot + shell
No more a german crown.
