really appreciates. Burkard, too, was offered a transfer but he declined because he did not want to abandon his work here [as committee chairman], for which he deserves praise. I doubt he’ll be able to keep the men united and organised in the long term, especially once some more restless elements from Melbourne arrive. He won’t get enough appreciation and even now you can hear some voices that more would have been achieved without B. But there can be no doubt that B. made a huge effort and has achieved a lot under the circumstances.
We have not yet seen a lot of the Colombo people, they keep rather apart! In a way that’s hardly astonishing since everybody in the camp dresses quite casually and you’ll never know at first glance what intellect and mentality you’re dealing with. Come to think of it, we pretty much felt the same when we arrived.
[Note in margin :] We have had a lot of rain in the past few weeks. The camp is one big morass, and when nature calls and you have to go outside you can hardly keep from sinking in. For the rest, you’re more or less stuck inside.
