into camp.
The camps in Ceylon have been closed because the government was expecting some indigenous uprisings for mid-August, as some of the gentlemen told us. They were shipped to Australia on the steamer ‘’Star of Ireland’’, which was really equipped for the transport of horses and had only a few cabins. Those were given to the ladies, while all men had to sleep in hammocks in the hold, which was said to have been awful, not least because the weather was bad all along. The prisoners had to help clean the ship, including the lavatories, and only 20 a day were allowed up on deck. The captain supposedly said from the start that he was not equipped for the transport of prisoners, but the Ceylonese government forced him to do it. The American consul in Colombo, who apparently looked after the Germans quite rigorously, is said to have been outraged about the conditions when he saw them off on the day of the departure. – The arrival of these Colombo gentlemen is a welcome
