The Pommies standing nearby noticed the agitation of course and, partly due to the already palpable tension in the air and partly out of recklessness, decided to seize the opportunity to throw a few of the gentlemen into the Kallabush. They grabbed a Mr Burkard from Sydney and 2 other gentlemen and simply took them away, allegedly because they hadn’t stood in rank and file. That did it, of course. That evening the events were discussed in all alleys of the camp and everybody agreed to a general strike the next day. But it seems the spies in the camp
immediately reported this decision to the Australian officers because the next morning, the canteen remained closed. There was the usual roll-call but nobody reported to work at
9am. Pickets were placed here and there to deter
