The committee has taken official notes of the affair Arndt and the earlier affair Tiedemann. Lately I’ve heard a story that happened before our arrival. A Capt. Schmidt, who had complained several times about the forced labour, one day was taken from the camp by a group of armed soldiers. The rumour was spread that he was going to be executed for insubordination when in actual fact he was being transferred to Berrima. The Commander went as far as to have the soldiers fire a salvo to be heard in camp and the comrades who went to work next morning were being shown a freshly dug grave by the Pommies. At first, of course, many believed the story but the captain’s presence in Berrima could not be hidden for long. But it just goes to show the shenanigans with which the Commander tries to get respect from the Germans! It is really hard to believe.
