J. is the township closest to the prison, of about 1000 inhabitants, which of course had more or less all appeared at the wharf to take a look at their new neighbours. They looked like rural people who had come to gawk at a passing prince. Unmistakeably they were in their Sunday best, even though it was a Wednesday. But unlike Sydney and Liverpool, we were not received with insults, etc; quite on the contrary, empathy with our lot was visible on a many a face.
