Sydney and the camp was represented by [Ehrenkrauss?] and Hamann [or Harmann], an engineer from the ‘’Markomannia’’. A wreath with a black-white-red bow was put on the coffin, and a German priest, Schenk, from Sydney held the eulogy graveside.
The Major, telegraphically informed about the latest incident, returned and the negotiations with the committee finally gained some traction. A day before the Major’s return, Colonel Wallak, State commandant of New South Wales [English original], had already visited the camp and agreed to the main demands of the committee. In all, we made 27 requests to all of which the Major consented, whereupon we returned to work. But a human life had to be sacrificed before these Australians came to their senses.
Many of the 27 points coincide with our previous requests. Of the new ones, these are the main ones:
1) the Pommies Lehmann and Mackay are no longer allowed inside the camp
and ideally will be removed altogether. (Lehmann was indeed dismissed.)
