Each wing has 16 cells on each level, and mine is No. A44 on the right wing’s second level. In the backyard between the wings is the communal kitchen and attached to it a huge oven. Both are unusable, despite repairs by the authorities, and have to be renovated first. Thus we had to build an interim facility, which is connected to the hall by a covered corridor. Our cells measure 7 ft by 11 ft and are 8 ft high; they have an iron door onto the
corridor, which in the times of criminal inmates was locked at night but now remains open, and in the opposite wall a small barred window, as is usual in prison cells. Thus we are sheltered against the elements, hopefully keeping cool in summer and certainly being warmer in winter than we were in horrible Liverpool. It seems they intend to treat us more like gentlemen, which would be very agreeable, but it remains to be seen how long the good intention lasts.
