a theatre troupe, both housed in tents, there’s nothing on offer. Our arrival will probably
facilitate a few changes, but the time is a bit limited because of forced labour.
The theatre is run by a Mr Schroeder, who was in Australia for [research on] a travel book that was to be published by the Hamburger Fremdenblatt [the Hamburg Foreign News]. He is a journalist and, since publications are pretty much non-existent, has written several plays borrowing from plays he once saw or read. Mainly it’s comedies, such as ‘’The Cousin from the Country’’, ‘’A Patent Remedy’’, etc, etc that are being performed. The troupe members put in the utmost effort and since most of them are simple seamen, it’s astonishing what’s being accomplished, even more so since they have only the most primitive means for costumes, props and sets. As for the female roles, there are a few suitably delicate men, but they do seem rather droll on stage with their deep voices. Because of the growing population in the camp
