It appears that the date of this letter although 1831 appears on it, should be 1838. James Macarthur was married by Archdeacon Scott on June 14, 1831 to Emily Stone (see back pp. 192, 194 where Scott records their intention of paying him a visit -) In a letter written by James to his Brother Edward, dated Ainslie Place, Edinburgh, he said that he and his wife were to go to Whitfield to say from August 3rd to 6th,
The '31' is not the year number but the day number - "30" has been crossed out. A.T. Atkinson
