My Dear James,

I have for many months past been on the point of writing to you, yet under the sad & afflicting intelligence recd. from your family I knew not what to say or how to begin - last week your brother most kindly forwarded me a letter from yourself & your Sister Elizabeth both of which on family matters gave me the greatest pleasure & let us all hope that the goodness of Providence will not only continue but be increased & release you all from so much pain & affliction
