   Leaving Melbourne on Jan 31st. It
was not till Mar 9th that we
reached Wyndham owing to the
disorganised state of the steamer
service at Port Darwin.
   I had great difficulty in ob -
taining horses pack saddles and
other articles of camp equipment
that I had not
already secured at Melb & Sydney. In some
instances I was asked  £28 for
a very ordinary horse. The
Government Resident did not think
it was safe for me to venture
into the Regent Territory with
less than 10 men : which
number would have required
at least eighteen horses, and
saddles, pack and riding, in proportion
necessitating much greater
