This league has been founded to combat a terrible peril – the peril of reconciliation – after
the war is over.

The idea that peace and goodwill should ever be restored in Europe is unthinkable to all patriotic Englishmen, to all who are not sentimentalists or pro-German. We can never trust any member of that lying, treacherous and homicidal nation again. We must remember this apparent paradox: that the Germans are groaning under the iron heel of despotism and yet that every individual German is entirely responsible for this war and for each and all of its accompanying miseries and brutalities. Hence, even when the war is over, we must
continue the noble principle of private vendetta.
Let it be carefully understood that we do Not hate the Germans. We are incapable of such an emotion. We cannot sing hymns of hate or call on the Almighty to punish Germany. It may be our magnanimity; it may be our exquisite sense of honour; but we are and shall always be utter strangers to that peculiar view which has infested the
