by car – towards the prison, which was about 2 hours away. The march took us through hilly terrain and mostly bushland and was really rather a pleasant walk. There was no farming along the road, and only occasionally did we see a few grazing cows or a small vineyard. A large part of the population followed us, some on foot, some in cars, and we heard quite a few exclamations of ‘’poor fellows’’ which we acknowledged with a grateful heart. It is indeed a nice feeling as prisoner to encounter sympathetic people. Shortly before our final destination, at the township of Arakoon, which really exists only on paper, we re-entered Trial Bay. The township consists of just 3 buildings, the largest of which is
some kind of hotel. Here too various [indecipherable] parties had gathered and watched us with awe but silently pass. Another ¼ hour and we stood in front of the gate and our future home.
