as the Italian Riviera. The sea was blue & with scarcely a splash on the little gravel beaches. Sailing ships seemed common & made the sea scene picturesque. Landwards the hills & mountains rose very steeply & picturesquely.
We reached Vintimiglia, the border about 1.30 am & passed through the customs barrier expeditiously enough being soldiers, but had to wait till about 5.30 am for the French train to start. Here again we found the British military policeman on duty, a more valuable aid in looking after us than anyone else could be
