ignorant on such matters. After dinner we took the tram to the summit of a neighbouring hill & enjoyed a fine view of the city in its valley & cut in two by the great river Arno, and also of the surrounding country.
Next we saw the old cathedral of Florence an octagonal gaol like but ornamental building & the present one which is faced or built in black & white marble arranged in zebra-like fashion.
The next morning we went by train to Rome
