At Venice a boy guide showed me to an hotel I had been recommended to by a Tommy. I had dinner spaghetti, oily potatoes etc with some French soldiers on leave at the hotel & went to the theatre (opera) then for a walk promptly becoming lost in the hopeless maze of narrow alleys which serve for streets.
An accurate sense of smell would be the best guide in Venice except on the lagoon front which is a very picturesque place & would in a later month under a blue sky be beautiful
Of course I visited St Marks
