till they approach the alley-ways of some of the other Italian cities.  The roads are all cobbled & tolerably clean on the average.  The surprising feature of the city is the great number of squares varying from the fine Piazza Venetia in the heart of the city to the tiny ones in the remote parts of the city.  Another feature is the great number of fountains, likewise varying from the most beautiful to the simplest.

As for the Sights of Rome, which are properly mentioned before all else, they must be divided into three classes:- Ancient, Modern, & Art
